The only way to really know that you have improved is to have robust and accurate measurements in place.

The first step of measurement is deciding what you want to achieve.  It may seem an obvious statement, but how many organisations set clear goals and objectives which can be measured?

Next comes data gathering. Most organisations have plenty of data, but the real question is whether the right things are being measured, whether the raw data is turned into useful information and the results then used to drive the business forward.

Reliance on “gut feel” and intuition is not enough to ensure success.  The only way you know you’ve got better is through the numbers.
